Small place with food that that packs a punch! I started with a mango batido which was very good. I also had the malt batido which was very good as well. I got the traditional frita and it was great! Very flavorful and it was a good size. It wasn't over-seasoned either -- I could still taste the beef. The server was very friendly too, and the food came out quickly. My family and I usually go to El Ray de las Fritas (we have been going there for years). We love that place, but I think I like El Mago better. The malt batido at El Mago is more malty and it's also sweeter. The frita is comparable to El Ray's frita, but I like El Mago's frita just a little more.

I've come around. These fritas are really damn good. I grew up on Morro Castle(the one in east Hialeah) and thus I'm partial to their style but Mago puts together a delicious frita and the service is incredible. On our most recent visit we also got an order of Ajiaco (awesome) and an order of Chicharones (really good). I get the feeling that the more I come here the better it will get and that's pretty exciting. Pro tip - get your frita "a caballo"

Found off yelp when searching for good Cuban food. This place was amazing. The fritas (Cuban burgers) were amazing and the prices were a great deal. Awesome service. 5 stars, highly recommend.

So I've been eying this place for some time now, so one day we were thinking about what to eat, and since my better half never had one I asked if he would be willing to try one and luckily he said Yes!!! Yay!!! So off we went and who was in the kitchen!!! The Mago himself, he is as cool as can be, so cute, he got hungry after a while though he had to sit down and eat, but he was always keeping an eye on the kitchen. We sat at the counter, Maria helped us, she was so sweet, she explained to my boyfriend what a frita was. So we ordered two of them, with cheese. The patties were on the thicker side, different from that "other place" lol, they were cooked to perfection. I would've liked my bread a little bit toastier, but hey!!! You don't argue with the Mago!! I tried the Guanabana shake, it was good, but I think next time I will order the mango one. We also ordered a cortadito that was PERFECT! And the Flan, of course! You have to order that for dessert! Let me tell you! We were fighting over that flan! It was just perfect. So if you're in the area, or you're just curious about it, do yourself a favor and go have a frita!!! You'll love them.

WOW!!! Those are my words for this restaurant. We drove from Houston to visit a friend and drove to Miami. We found it on yelp and decided to give it a try. We are so glad we did! Amazing food!! I ordered Frita de pollo delicious!!! Everything was delicious! I'm glad we were able to go!! Definitely going back there when we are in Miami!

Best frita in miami hands down. I have heard about this place for a long time and finally decided to go. It was truly a wise decision. I really love the fritas here and even ordered another one after I devoured the first one. The service was on point. The owners daughter even came over to our table to make sure everything was good. She was very nice and even made a great beer recommendation. The beer was called 1906 and it was delicious. My friends and I all had a great time and enjoyed some amazing food. Can't wait to go back again.

This is the BEST frita I have ever had. I first heard about this place from other yelpers so I bookmarked it to give it a try. First time I came here it was a Friday night around 8:30 pm, I arrived and somebody comes out and tells me the place is closed, I checked the times at the door and noticed it actually closes at 8. Well, the person that came out was super nice and told me to come back the next day. Next time I came back it was two weeks later Friday at 7:50 pm, I was all hesitant because I knew the place was about to close, I go in and a guy inside is like YOU MADE IT!, he was joking and probably could see on my face how happy I was to barely made it. I ordered the traditional frita which was delicious, the bread was soft and crusty on the outside and the papitas were crunchy. They served it with a couple of bottles of ketchup and hot sauce on the side to add to the frita of you want to. Loved it and highly recommended it, also, the people are really nice and friendly.

We came over to El Mago de las Fritas on our way out of Miami. The allure of a Cuban burger with Fritas mixed in with the bun sounded fairly appealing. I have to say the food did not disappoint. The restaurant is family owned and it shows. The smiles, constant service, and general casual air immediately put us at ease. The food itself was delicious. They took about 10 minutes to get us our food and with their famous homemade hot sauce, the burger with fried eggs was a home run. It was crunchy, spicy, and the meat was deliciously tender. As for service, they came over and checked on us regularly as well as engaging us in conversation when things got slower. The owner came out to greet us personally and ask us about our food. All in all, a great last meal before heading off to New York. I'd recommend the fried eggs with the burger and the mango shake. They're both delicious!

Best Fritas in Miami hands down. There are some others that are good but nothing compares to the magic man.

Just wonderful. Frita doble a caballo is amazing. Oh, and get the flan, too.

Except for the annoying pictures of Obama's visit on the wall, the place is a must-visit when in Miami. Fritas are excellent, and the milkshakes a great too! Truly an old Miami gem.

I can never end up in the Miami area without stopping and seeing my El Mago to load up on some of his "Magic"!!!!!! Like I have stated in my previous reviews there is simply nothing like the flavor and passion that is put into any of the food items you have here... The one got to get item here would have to be his world famous Cuban Frita, but if you not in the know make sure you save room and try some the world class soup or beans made by El Mago himself. Simply by tasting them you will be transported back to you abuelas kitchen and reminded of that old school style of Cuban cooking she used to make....So trust me and make it a point to stop by and grab a taste of El Mago you won't go wrong!!!

We came to have a quick bite here the moment we landed in Miami. The staff were very friendly and we were welcome by Mariah. She broken down the entire menu for us and make some recommendations. As a group of 4 as ordered: - 3 traditions fritas - fries on the side - mango and papaya shakes - flan for dessert Everything was amazing! We made the best choice to stop by here. The food was out of this world. It had this warm feeling as if you have nene eaton fried many times before. This is a must if you are anywhere near the Miami Airport

First and foremost I called in and the girl didn't even speak English!! . The Frita wasn't all that I believe el Rey de las Fritas is 100% better! The Fritas fries where old and not crunchy. The service was horrible!!! The girl was super rude I swear horrible horrible experience.

Delicious! My husband and I visited on a Friday for a late lunch. We had a Frita a caballo (with egg and cheese) and it was absolutely amazing. Great flavorful seasoning, a bit greasy BUT come on and be real- you are not coming here to eat healthy ! The food was made to order, fresh. The Cuban bread roll was lightly toasted and warmed. The server was really nice, as we sat down came over and offered us a menu. She recommended the natural house made watermelon drink- Jugo de melon. The drink was really good and sweet. To finish our satisfying meal, we ordered a flan. AMAZING ! The service is great and the food was delicious. The "Mago" was there and joking with customers and the employees; he shows he cares about his business and your experience there. Will definitely come back and visit this location if we are ever in the area!! :)))

Amazing food and service! We stopped in the last night of our trip to experience some Cuban food and we were not disappointed. We had 2 Fritas and were blown away. The tamales, smoothies, and homemade flan were excellent as well. Loved the staff !!

A must stop when visiting Miami for me. Lived in Miami most of my life and never came here. I really wish I had but I'm glad I decided to make the trip this time. "El Mago" is actually the guy making your food and he's worth the visit alone. The entire staff was super friendly and you could tell they really enjoy being there and care about their product. The bar is great to sit and enjoy a meal while people watching and enjoying the experience. For the food, this isn't a normal burger. The Frita is a chorizo based patty with potato strings and sauce on it. But the best part for me by far is the bread. A burger bun but made like Cuban bread. It was all great and the combination was a messy pile of delicious. The Perro was also made in the same style with potato strings, sauce, all on the same cuban style hot dog bun. Again it was messy but worth it. Pastelito de Guayaba esa also delicious. I wasn't really expecting a whole lot from the food as I'm not a huge burger and hot dog fan but I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors. I will definitely be back when I am in town. Not only for the food but for the staff and the overall experience.

The cuban Caballo with a fried egg and cheese, yes please. They have a pork pastry that is fabulous as well. I loved the hot sauce, I used 1/4 the bottle it was so good. I must add, no matter how full you are, you must get the flan. The best way to finish a fabulous meal. In a nutshell, yum!!!

    (5)
  • JoCat R.

Yumm!! I followed the advice of other yelpers and went with the pan con bistec. It was super yummy. The bread was crispy, the steak was thin but juicy and the lettuce and tomatoes were fresh. I added mayo to mine and it was perfect. The place was packed with people, but it was a cool little Cuban spot in the heart of Westchester. The only negative I have to say is that the potato stix were burnt and tasted old and stale. But it was still a great sandwich over all. :)

    (4)
  • Suny R.

Hands down the best chicharrones I've ever had, so yummy, crispy and yet meaty!!! Must try but they only have them on Saturdays.

    (5)
  • Jonathan V.

Frita with egg was great. Also got the Perro (hot dog), and it was great too. The little potato wisps were so good. I ordered the mamey shake, but was not a fan. Had a "powdered" taste to it. And the best part, I got to speak to EL MAGO!

  • Dan B.

If anyone gives this place less than 5 stars they should be slapped in the mouth. What's not to like about this place? Wander in, sit at the counter, and just order a frita. What type you ask? Well I asked the man himself, El Mago- the owner/frita wizard. He recommended El Caballo- frita with fried egg and cheese. I almost swallowed the thing whole it was so GD delicious. The guy is a friggin mad genius. This place is an absolute gem. All the ladies at the counter were crazy nice and friendly. Todos hablando español. So good. Go there immediately.

Frita a caballo and mango batido -- crazy amazing lunch. Saturday chicharrones? Yes. yes yes yes. Only one day in Miami? Only one stop needed. Gracias, Mago.

This place was a major to do on my 3 day miami trip. my mouth was watering for a frita ever since i saw this on TV about a year ago. So i made the treck all the way from Miami Beach to El Mago De Las Fritas for lunch and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. I ordered one original frita, order if fries and a papaya shake. The fries were MEH, standard store bought crinkle cut fries. But the frita!!! The frita was on the money, the meat was incredibly flavorful, the bun was nice and soft and the potato straws added crunch that went perfect with the other flavors of the sandwich. The surprise of the visit was the papaya shake which was the best shake I've had in recent memory. Although i wouldn't get the fries here (just get 2 fritas instead) the bottom line for me is this place us a MUST DO when ever I'm in miami and for that it deserves 5 stars.

Beat Cuban food I have ever had... Too bad it's all the way in Miami...the fact that everything has potato chips makes it even more delicious! The service was also outstanding! From the moment we sat down, the ladies there couldn't do enough to make us feel welcomed. I absolutely recommend this place... Oh and you must try the croquetas... Amazing!!

The realist. The food, atmosphere, and service are so legit I'm not even going to take off a star for the very limited parking

A couple months ago I tried my first frita at the other place. It was ok but I couldn't see what the big deal was. Now I just had one at El Mago. This one was much better. The people were so friendly too. They spoke English. They took credit cards. I had mine with an egg and cheese, and I also had some chicken soup. I haven't eaten my to-go flan yet, but I'm sure it's awesome as well.

This place is very unique. Not much in ambience but the best fritas anywhere. The mago greets you like family. Most come and try the best fritas in the world.

Quick Summary: Had to hit up this location after finding about Fritas, and lucky me this was THE location to be at. The patty is a deliciously spiced and perfectly grilled, and I love the fried onion toppings. The bun is a little unique, thin crusty exterior and nice soft interior... all in all every bite was a yummy bit of juicy (and spicy) heaven. I haven't had other fritas to compare, but this one was very well prepared... oh man just writing this makes me want to drive the 4 hrs to Miami and grab another one! Oh, and take it from an Asian that loves spicy food and regulary orders native hot at Thai restaurants, when she says the hot sauce is hot... she means it!!

My mouth is still watering from the breakfast of a frita and a magic dog. We loved all of it. The ambiance, the friendly family servers and chef. We also met the owners son in law Barry who was so kind and explained everything to help us pick. We also had two yummy coffee con Leche fresh watermelon juice and a homemade flan to share at the end. Go to this place and be sure to try the homemade hot sauce. President Obama visited them in 2010 and is on the wall.

Born and raised in Westchester I've had my fair share of Fritas. Growing up they were never a favorite or first choice for me. In my older age I've gotten wiser and am now a fan. It's not something we eat often and I must say my husband's idea of heading over to El Mago this random Saturday afternoon was brilliant. I had never been to El Mago - I know - criminal for a Cuban-American but I've learned my lesson and we will definitely be back. I'm game to throw a fried egg and cheese on just about anything so why not a Frita. OMG next level deliciousness. I don't think eating a Frita will ever be the same. You can't to wrong for the price and the service was friendly and attentive.

I've been coming to El Mago de las Fritas for years with my dad. This place has the BEST frita (Cuban hamburger). They top the frita with onions, cheese, and homemade shoestring potatoes. You have to try one of the fresh juices and shakes. They have really good homemade flan for dessert. El Mago is there every day to cook up the food as soon as the order is placed and talk to the customers. The waitresses are very nice and constantly check to see if you need anything. Check this place out!

An excellent experience! Even if your Spanish is broken as was mine when I visited, you will feel at home. The food was perfect and Mago and his family were so kind. I had a great time and will come back next time I'm in town!

Super friendly staff and delicious food!!! Went twice during our trip to Miami!! The frita el caballo with cheese was amazing as well as their hot sauce. We then went back on Saturday for their chicharrones. Note: they only serve these on Saturdays!! Yum yum!! Wish we had this in NC!!

What visit to El Rey de las Guyaberas is complete without a visit to El Mago de las Fritas? I brought a buddy from out of town here in search of Miami's best Frita. This place is old school - countertop service, push-letter menu on the wall, and not a lick of English spoken. For our test we ordered two fritas - The original (Cuban hamburger with a chorizo/beef patty, no cheese, covered in potato sticks) as the control sample and the "a caballo" which is a frita with a fried egg and cheese on top. The fritas were freshly made so they took a bit to come out, but since they serve cold Presidente here we did not mind the wait. On the countertop there was a book listing great places to eat in the US and it was interesting to see "el Mago" was listed. Once the fritas came out we could definitely see why. The original Frita was absolutely delicious! The chorizo definitely gives it a kick and the potato sticks provide an awesome crunch to the whole experience. The "a caballo" version was even better with the yolk and cheese bringing the frita to another level. Overall a great meal, but we're glad we came here first since our next stop was "El Rey de las Fritas".....

Awesome bread. & really Great service! Tamales were delicious. & the homemade hot sauce was phenomenal. I am from Portland, Oregon where we have great food, but not much cuban cuisine so it was nice to experience authentic cuban cuisine at its finest.

I will admit I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to Fritas, or any kind of Cuban food for that matter. I had a Frita when I lived in New Jersey but it was kind of just ok for me. After reading so many great reviews on Yelp I decided to give Fritas another try, and I'm so happy I did. I came in right after getting out of work and ordered right away. All of the servers here are excellent, they always checked up on us making sure we were alright. There was a woman there, I believe she was the daughter. She was just extraordinary, she came to our table various times making sure everything was okay and talking to us about Jersey. Now, let's get on to the Fritas themselves. Delicious. Amazing flavor in every bite, I barely finished one when I felt so stuffed I still had one more to go! I couldn't do it I had to take it to go. I also ordered un Jugo de mango, que rico. It was very good and tasted super fresh. Definitely recommend this place.

The best frita in miami hands down ! If you go there you gotta get frita a caballo which means frita with an egg on the top...and you definitely should follow with the flan for postre ( dessert) it's so fire lol home made yummy goodness

It bothered MW that it was small but the price makes sense to the sandwich.first frita and the standards are put very high for others.the complexity of flavors are there and intense.highly recommend with their homemade hot sauce

I think it says something that of all the food we tried during our whirlwind tour of Miami, that the fritas here are far and above the most memorable things we ate! This was my first time trying fritas so I can't speak to authenticity but I know good food, and the combination of soft, crusty bun, sauteed onions, crispy potato strings, sunny-side up egg, and hamburger patty in the Frita a Caballo all were perfectly seasoned and executed! Absolutely delicious! After noticing that they forgot to include the eggs, I flagged the waitress expecting that they would just cook 2 eggs and add it on top of our fritas. Instead, Brian(?) the marketing manager came up to apologize and insisted that they make a fresh set of Fritas a Caballo so we could enjoy everything hot and fresh (and keep our existing fritas). That's great customer service, folks! Afterwards, we enjoyed a great conversation about the current and future direction of El Mago and the food scene in Miami - it felt like an episode from one of Anthony Bourdain's shows! Be aware that parking in the area seems tough!

  • Nolan A.

Excellent fritas (like a hamburger, but made from a mix of beef and chorizo, and topped with fried potato wisps). Service is friendly, but not necessarily fast. If you're looking for a big meal, try the magic dog: a frita and hot dog in one

Yea I'm a Fan! Small location in South Miami on 8th Street. Limited parking in front of restaurant. There is about 6 tables and chairs inside with several seats at the counter top. Its a Family owned restaurant with Mago doing the cooking and preparing of his frita recipe which only He knows. His daughter works there as well. The batidos are very tasty and he makes chichiarrones on Saturdays. He also has daily Cuban specials that he prepares himself. He's well known for a reason.

It took me to 2014, but I finally had a frita! When deciding where to go to try this Miami staple, where else but to the mago? I don't spend much time in the Flagami area, so I was doubly happy to have a reason to eat some good food and see a different side of Miami. Don't come in expecting anything fancy. This is a diner. Come in. Say 'hello' (more like, 'hola'). Sit in a booth. Look at the walls. Look at the menu. Order. Make sure that order includes a frita (duh) and a jugo. It's pretty basic. Order in, El Mago started to do his thing. There's a reason why the POTUS is on the wall, smiling and satisfied. El Mago es el mago. This stuff is delicious. Being a fan of all things fresh fruit, my jugo melon was bursting with vitamins, aromatics, pulp, and the deliciousness you can only get from fresh fruit juice. I could drink a gallon of this stuff. To wait for our fritas, a couple of folks at my table enjoyed the split pea soup special of the day. Being that I've seen The Exorcist, I stayed away from the stuff and waited for my frita. I ordered mine a caballo. The egg, onion, cheese, and potato stick combo was a flavor experience of pure enjoyment. I wondered how much fat and cholesterol I just ingested but reasoned that i countered it with the jugo melon. What? P.S. Click on the website and start jamming.

We are from out of town and wanted a good cortadito. And boy we were surprised! Wonderful experience! Great drinks and we tried their famous frita and it was delicious! A little hole in the wall but well worth the stop. Also the prices are incredible!

If you've never had a frita, you really need to get down here. I can't even describe the amazingness of this. I wish I could come here everyday, but if I did that, I'd gain about 200 lbs. The cortadito I had after my frita was just as good as the frita. They are about to go on a tour of the Northeast. Look them up and find out where and when. It will be worth it.

This place was awesome. The staff was welcoming and so helpful! We weren't sure what we wanted, and our waitress (the daughter of the owner) helped us out. She was spot on. My very picky and not up for trying anything new father had the Frita Tradicional. His review: it's better than the McDonalds double for $.50 more. This is essentially a Michelin rating from him. We also ordered a bunch of Fritas caballos and I won't be able to do justice to how great they were. SO. GREAT. I was wary of the egg on top, but went with it. I'm glad I did. Our group washed down the deliciousness with orange fanta and homemade watermelon juice (also excellent). To top it off, we shared a really great dulce de leche. It was unique and had the consistency of ricotta. We all really like it as well. Take a chance on this place. You will not be sorry!

The magical frita is here. There are other imitators, and other people who try to make the Cuban frita, however, this is the place. El Mago is still behind the counter overseeing the entire operation. It has been almost a year since I've been here, and I noticed that they went to an electronic register system and it looks like the magician has taken on an assistant. I would imagine that if you plan to visit this place you should come pretty soon as it looks like he may be taking a lesser role in the restaurant. He is still overseeing every aspect of the operation and still deserves is five star rating. I would imagine that his children are trying to upgrade this place and it could be the downfall. I had a double frita with an egg and it was magnanimous. He cooks his own potato sticks from scratch, as is everything here. I also had the black bean soup which is the best I've ever had. The flavor is impossible to re-create at home, trust me, I have tried. For dessert a homemade flan, and a homemade Dulce De Leche were on the menu and stupendous. The magician himself looks to be in his 80s - so as I said before getting here soon before things change for the worse.

What else is there to say except Wow! Keep in mind that this little joint is in the middle of little Havana, but that's where you can really find all the great spots for authentic Cuban food and this place is no exception. I've been to all the big frita spots and this is, by far, the best frita you will ever find. The mago himself is still in the kitchen making your fritas. It goes to show how much cuban soul is put into these puppies. The president himself went to this exact location and partook of the most delicious frita on the planet. There's even photos there to prove it. Don't let this chance pass you by while the mago hinself is still making these great cuban-style hamburgers.

One of the great cuban gems in Miami. Try a frita and one of the best made just don't go on Saturday they get way too packed mid day and they only got one cook.

  • Chris E.

The frita was so good. The crispy onions and the seasoning( apparently a secret recipe that is used instead of oil) really took the frita over the top...and they were so reasonably priced! We may have eaten too much because of how delicious they were

The frita was delicious.... Came from Texas to try the frita.... Service was top notch... And the Cuban coffee was incredible. Would definitely come again... Only bad part... Parking.... Very limited.

I have no words to describe how good those fritas are. Absolutely delicious. I had two Double Fritas, one with egg and cheese and the other one only with cheese and it was amazing. I could´ve eaten two more!!! the juices are fresh, done at the time you order them. Unbelievably good, and the service was amazing.

The most delicious burger/sandwich I ever had! The fries were crispy and flavorful, the bread was toasted perfectly, the combo of everything was like an explosion goodness on my taste buds. My bf and I both had the frites Cubana caballo with a fried egg on top. The flan was also the best I have had. This was a small mom and pops place. I highly recommend it !

We have been coming here for the past 25 years and these are truly the best Fritas in Miami! Visiting El Mago & his staff is like having dinner with family and friends that you really enjoy! The food and service is excellent and always with a smile! Manny & Maria

Delicious food!!!! Amazing service!!!! My dad and I went on a Saturday and were surprised to see how crowded it was... But that's how you know how good the food is! We sat on the barstools and had the best service ever! Absolutely 5 stars! The only downside to this place is limited parking!

After seeing a special on the travel channel about Cuban burgers I knew I had to try it. This is the first time I've ever had a frita and it was so amazing! It was just so light but yet still filling the spices were seasoned just perfect. Barry the son in law was so nice and welcoming and made sure we were taken care of :) The Cuban bread contains lard so they were nice enough to change the bread for us which we greatly appreciated! I tried the cortadito it was the best coffee. Seriously this place offered the best experience for me, believe me you won't be disappointed everyone should check this place out if your visiting Miami!!!

Looking for a Cuban lunch after leaving the airport. Fritas were really good. Croquette sandwich was alright, but nothing to write home to. Fritas is the way to go. No question. Helps to know a little Spanish, but that's anywhere in Miami. Only problem we had was parking. They only have a couple spots out front, we had to park about two blocks away.

I can't say enough about this place. It's a small, whole in the wall, restaurant with a "family business" kind of service mentality. First name bases are common around this here and I can see why. The food will have you coming back for more on a regular basis. The portions are just right and the price is too!

Great great fritas.. We love supporting local small restaurants because the food is usually great.. Hands down this place did not disappoint. My husband and a regular frita and I had one with the egg and they were both excellent. Such a great family place..

My first experience eating a Frita and luckily I chose El Mago. Fantastic food and service. The owner was there and they made me feel at home. I'm new to Miami and they went out of their way to welcome me. Highly recommended.

Amazing fritas, really can't go wrong and pretty decent tamales. definitely try the homemade hot sauce and parking is a hassle though.

The only place to get Fritas. We vacation in the area and stop here several times each time. The Fritas with cheese, onion, and cheese is AMAZEBALLS and the cafe con leche is the best we've had. Worth the drive and the parking hassles.

Came in on a Saturday afternoon and was met by very friendly servers. They treated me as if I was a regular there (it was my first time to stop in). I ordered the frita caballo con queso (Frita with egg and American cheese) and at the recommendation of my waitress, I got the chicharrones as well (only available on Saturday). As far as the food was concerned, it was excellent. The beef for the frita is cooked with some "special sauce" on a griddle flat-top, so the flavor is really locked in. The buns are specialty Cuban buns bought from a local bakery. Very light and fluffy but they hold the sandwich together very well. They also press the bun on the griddle to collect the remainder of the juices, further adding to the flavor. The fries are very small, shoestring-style and really impressive. They make their own. Add in a little onions and a slice of cheese and the frita really comes together well. There are four or five flavors, but each one was used moderately, so you still got a good taste of it all. The chicharrones were really interesting. Very crunchy on the outside, relatively bland, and they soak up the hot sauce I put on them (in a good way). For the service, it's too bad there isn't 6 stars. The ladies here were really great I thought. Besides being very efficient, they were willing to chat and talk about the restaurant, etc. Just a really great experience.

I'm sure I would like this place if I wasn't a vegetarian. Still, if you're a vegetarian, don't go here. I should have known otherwise, but I thought I could find something tasty. I went for a guava empanada. It was not good. The empanda is a semi-circle that's about 7 inches long but is filled with only a spoonful of guava jelly. That meant that the vast majority of what I ate was fried dough. Fried dough is good when it comes in the form of a doughnut, but this fried dough was more like a giant wantan. I wasn't impressed. I also ordered a guava and cheese pastry, but I was given a guava pastry. It wasn't tasty either. Again, there was a lot of bread and little guava. Both the pastry and the empanada were dry and tasted like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time.

I had a double fritas with egg, wife had a pan con chicken, our one year old had the croquetas. Everything was delicious and the amount of food for the price can't be beat. My fritas had excellent flavor and the potatoes were nice and crispy. Oh I can't forget the chicharrones which were nice and crispy. On top of the food being great the service was excellent. "Welcome home" was how we were greeted and it really did feel like visiting a distant relative. I can't forget the flan and dulce de leche that we tried! I was a huge fan of the flan, the taste was simple and delicious not overly sweet. The dulce de leche wasn't like anything is had before in that it was more chunky with excellent flavor. That was my wife's favorite. We're from out of town but any time were in Miami, we'll make sure to visit home :)

Such a simple, quick dish but absolutely delicious. Decided to try this place after hearing about the hype -- they resemble White Castle sliders in LOOKS but the taste would cause Harold and Kumar to regret not finding out about this place before. The patty is very thin (i'd ask for a double patty next time) but bursting with a picadillo-like flavor that was quite addicting. The crunch of the fritas on top balances out the softness of the fluffy bread. Now I understand why some people enjoy throw a couple potato chips into their sandwiches. They have fresh squeezed fruit juices which is always better, and the staff are very friendly and will strike up a conversation. Only negative is that it's kind of hard to find when you're zipping down busy Calle Ocho and also, the parking "lot" is only 4,5 spaces. But if you're in the area and want a quick bite, this is definitely the perfect place to go!

Yelp comes through again! Super clean and impressive. Stopped by after a conference. Good decision. Ordered the specialties to bring home for a treat. Wife and kids said I should have bought more. I definitely recommend the papaya shake (I did not share that).

I had the Frita al Caballo (with a fried egg)...probably one of the, if not the, best fritas I have had....met the owner and son in law, both class acts....be careful with their home made hot sauce, its pretty potent....only complaint? PARKING! Worth more than one visit....

I used to go to El Mago wtih my parents when I was little. I hadn't been there in years but I just recently went and its exactly as I remember it. He makes the BEST FRITAS in Miami, hands down. Just the right amount of seasoning, and perfect grill time. Make sure you get the frita with everything (onions, ketchup & matchstick potato thingies) + cheese if you must but I prefer it without. They also have Watermelon juice for $1......delcious and refreshing. Small place. A little difficult to park since its just off of busy 8 street. But definitely worth the hassle. UPDATE: Been to a few other local places recently and honestly, NONE measure up. So I've decided to up my review to 5 Stars. I'd give it 4 because parking sucks but that wouldn't be fair to them because it is not a direct reflection on the business or the delicious food they serve.

I've lived in Miami for 6 years and have never had a frita. Enter last months Travel Channel episode of Burgerland featuring the cuban "hamburger." The burger features a spiced patty grilled in a special sauce, onions, and julienned fried potatoes on a Cuban roll. Sounds simple enough but from what I've seen it's not easy to execute...unless you are El Mago. The family and I went for lunch on a quiet Saturday afternoon, I was instantly disappointed because the parking situation is bad. You have to park in an adjacent lot and walk toward the store if you're not lucky enough to snag the 2(!) spots in the front of the restaurant. Luckily, it was worth it! We were greeted and seated in the last booth. At first I was hoping to move but I'm so glad we didn't. We got to see El Mago in action, expediting orders, cooking the burgers, and just enjoying himself. He even came over as we were finishing our meal and asked how everything was. A very nice man, personable. Now on to the food. Our waitress informed us that they had fresh chicharonnes de puerco that day, so of course we ordered one because you don't pass up fresh chicharron. These were the best chicharrones I've had in Florida. They were cooked perfectly, crispy and not soggy or overly greasy. So good we ordered another one on the spot. The main event or the frita was equally delicious. I ordered the original single and my husband the double with cheese. They were delicious, the patty spiced, the julienne fries crispy, and the Cuban roll toasted. We will definitely return for the frita and chicharrones but also to say hi to El Mago. This place is a Miami institution and should not be missed.

Great place for a traditional Cuban frita. The whole price of a frita, fresh mango juice, and fries came out to under $10! Quick and friendly service.

One of the best places to eat in Miami. Food is authentic, well seasoned, abundant and served with a smile. Parking is a problem but the fritas are second to none.

Surprise it was the Burger beast that sent me. Authentic Cuban food. From a diet pina to homemade tamales. Excellent. I went for the famous hambuger Cuban style called the Frita. It was good - different. glad I tried it. I'm spoiled with ROK: BRGR or Le tub a completely different experience. the owner of El Mago and his family are terrific and efficient. Again I have no other Frita to compare it to but with all the press I will assume this is indeed one of the best. enjoy it's worth a try. (on Saturday they have chicarones which was delicious)

I don't know about the competition as this is my first trip to Miami & my first try of Fritas. Yelp viewers were spot on. The fritas was so good. From the lightly toasted buns with soft interior to the juicy meat (not greasy), topped off with crispy fries that looks like the shredded potato chips in can, but well done, melted cheese & fried egg. I like my egg runny, but not on sandwich. This was half way between over ready & medium. I asked for their hot sauce, and the server did warn me along with other reviewers who days the sauce was hot. It was! But delicious. I asked if they bottle and sell it and was sad to hear that they don't. My server took pity & gave me a small container to go. I then asked her about the fruit smoothie & she suggested the mango. It was yummy. The place was clean, the service great, food awesome. I would come back. I wasn't too sure about the surroundings though. For me, best to go before dark.

The best and most consistent frita in town. El Mago prepares and makes the patties himself. There, that's the secret. I like mine "a caballo con queso" i.e., with a fried egg + cheese on top. Fritas here are served with chopped onions that give it the right kick and homemade "papitas"...not the canned variety served at other frita joints that shall remain nameless (I'm looking at'chu Sergio's). When I'm really hungry and feeling like a fat kid who doesn't share his generic Kirkland Signature Oreos, I get a "pan con bistec" (steak sandwich) too. El Mago's mojo #does #not #play. The first bite might get you on the jaw (atrás de las muelas), but have no fear, your tastebuds will be hollering "dame más, mami (or papi)!" in no time. If you come on a Saturday, start with the chicharrones (pork rinds). If that's the case, wash it down con un lagarto or una fría (a cold one). If you're going to mass at Little Flower afterwards and don't wanna skip communion, have a "batido de mamey" (mamey shake) or a "jugito de melon" (watermelon juice). Wrap things up with a flan and a cafecito. Call a friend and tell her what you just did. No, not THAT.

Decided to try it out based on the yelp reviews and it absolutely delivered in every way you read about on here. First, the service is excellent, everyone is very friendly, helpful and ready to do whatever they can to insure you have a great experience. I will admit, this was the only frita I had while in town but it set a very high standard for frita a caballo. While visiting I also tried a mango milkshake, which was great and reasonably priced. Even decided to try the cuban coffee, which was also perfect. My recommendation, skip the tamal (or any other sides) and save room for a second frita!

If You Liked The Food, Tell Everyone If You Didn't, Tell "El Mago" Those are words to live by once you step inside this 1980s style Cuban diner. The owner and cook, known as "el Mago", has been preparing these Cuban patties for over 25 years. What is in that patty? Well, maybe a mix of chorizo and beef, maybe some paprika, but whatever it is, it is only one of the reasons why you walked in here. I'll be frank right off the bat. I am not a fan of the frita. Nor am I a fan of anything that tastes like a frita, and everything on the menu tastes like frita. Everything. So why am I a fan? Well, because they have "el Mago", of course! "El Mago" is an institution, he is an emblem of Miami, he is the shiznit. From his little frita shop he has seen Miami grow, become rich, poor, have no credit, evolve, change, stay alive. He knows about politicians, entrepreneurs, athletes, doctors, lawyers, all former patrons, and always finds the time to tell you a story in between customers. You will always be surprised when you talk to "el Mago", because he is a historian wearing an apron and a cook's hat. Whenever I visit, I normally have a batido, they're always good. Inevitably, the batido will make you hungry, so you have to order a frita, but it's no big deal, it's only $3. The whole time you are there, "el Mago" will entertain you with whatever pops in his head. He could start rambling on about cell phones and how he loses them so often that he doesn't know why he still buys them, if he will loose it sooner or later. Or he'll complain about having to drive to the Post Office when there was one across the street, on the corner of 57th & 8th. A waste of gas. It went up again, didn't it? Me cago en su m... Next time you are in the area, come in and see if you don't like the famous fritas. I challenge you. Make sure to sit towards the back, that way you will enjoy "el Mago". And make sure you talk to him, he will probably tell you he was getting tired of talking to the same old people, and will remember you if you show up again.

I was drawn to El Mago De Las Fritas after reading about the place in Hamburger America. Not really knowing what a frita was, I ordered one up and let the staff work their magic. It wasn't crowded so I enjoyed watching El Mago interact with the few patrons sitting at the high top counter. It's clear this man has a passion for the restaurant that keeps him working all day everyday. I listened to the patty grill, saw the bun be pressed and within minutes I was served a frita overflowing with potato sticks on a simple wooden plate. I took an eager bite and knew that it was going to be a great sandwich. Even though the patty is not thick like a regular burger, it is bursting with flavor that compliments the potato, onion and red sauce perfectly. I did not order cheese or egg with it but can only imagine them to be a great addition. I'd agree that the bread bun may be a little big but the meat's flavor still bursts right through. This place is simple, cheap and a great find on 8th Street. As long as El Mago is still running the place, I'll come back and take part in his legacy.

I went for the chicharrones. Burger Beast kept posting photos/videos of el Mago himself cooking it in the giant, gross casuela. Let me tell you something: seeing that casuela brought up so many memories of my grandfather frying up chicharrones in the backyard. He'd light up a mobile gas stove and place the casuela (which was probably being used since 1950s Cuba) on it. Bubbling oil and the chicharrones popping up to the surface. Guys, this is my childhood... I had to go to Mago. Sat at the bar because the place was packed... I don't recommend going on a Saturday noon-time. Ordered a batido de mamey, chicharrones and a pan con bistec. My friend ordered a frita. Batido de Mamey: great, creamy and it had a nice orange/pink color. Near-perfect shake. Chicharrones: some people strictly fry up el pellejito (skin) or cartillage. I fucks with that and some meat attached to it... and el Mago does just that. Lime juice and hot sauce on the side. This was heaven. Fresh-tasting and felt very homey. (I still swear by Palacio de los Jugos chicharrones, though...) Pan Con Bistec: honestly... this was perfect. Hate it when places ask if I want mayo and lettuce and all this shit... What? No. Pan con Bistec is steak, shoestring potatoes, onions, bread. That's it. And best part of all was that the steak was very acidic... which I love. Frita: Amazing sandwich. More acidic than your average Frita... and I'm all about that. Something weird, though, was that it tasted a little too similar to the bistec from the Pan con Bistec. Not a bad thing, I guess. El Mago is one of a kind. I know there's a competition between them and El Rey. I mean whatever-- they both offer things that are awesome. Listen, ain't nothin wrong with have a billion frita joints in the same vicinity.

We tried El Mago again after hearing everyone raving about it and seeing that even Obama was a fan, we had to give it another shot. I'm so glad we did. El Mago (not sure was his actual name is) started making our order after the server put it in. An endearing old man, he reminded me of my grandma when after he made our fritas he stopped what he was doing and came over to us on the counter. When we took our first bite he was waiting for our reaction. He asked, "Y que? Que tu cres?" or basically in spanish, how was it? As if my satisfied face wasn't enough (he was still waiting) I grunted out, "muy rico!" This seemed to please him and he went back to his magic on the grill. We ordered the original, the "presidencial" (with cheese) and the "a caballo" (with a fried egg on top). The original was very good, just as it should be with fresh fried julienne papitas. The one with cheese though was not my favorite. El Mago even told us it's not for everybody. Personally I think cheese on a frita is messing with perfection but tomato tomatto....The a Caballo frita was my favorite being as it had a perfectly cooked over-easy, runny egg inside the frita. DANG, that was freakin' delicious! El Mago also has daily specials of hard-to-find Cuban dishes like Ajaco(?), Chicharo, Caldo Gallego and Chicharones. We will definitely be back sooner rather than later!

I've known about this place since my college days. You don't eat here for the decor this is a true hole in the wall and food is simple but delicious. I'd describe a frita is like a Sloppy Joe on Cuban steroids. With cheese without cheese, raw onions with those perfect crispy potato (thin & curly) sticks and hot sauce...Delicioso!!! I'm not sure if he still makes it but if El Mago knew you he'd offer you his special hot sauce which was great too. I recommend washing it a with a Trigo shake which is basically blended puffed wheat (sugar smacks or golden crisps) then finish the meal with Café Cubano. A true local Cuban-Miami experience despite getting so national recognition lately from politicians to food shows.

Pretty sure this the Best Frita in Miami, although I'm gonna make another trip to 'Morro Castle' to make absolutely sure. :). Either way, had a great meal at Mago de Las Fritas. Split three Fritas with my wife and we ordered the Chicharrones which are the special on Saturdays. Bread seemed fresh-baked (makes a huge difference), patty was good-sized and topped generously with dices onions and home-made shoestring fries. Added a little home-made hot sauce (on every table!). Mmm-mmm good! Chicharrones were really good too. Washed it all down with a tasty shake. Great Saturday lunch!!! Place was clean, had cute decor, lots of awards on the wall. Service was VERY good... Courteous wait staff. Food came out relatively quickly. Booths were comfortable had A/C on. What's not to like?!?!?!?!?! Will be bringing my out of town visitors here for "A Taste of Miami". :-)

I lived in Miami for many years and during that time did not occur to visit this place. Now I live in another state and while on vacation there, decided to visit it. Never would I have thought to find a place with a better frita than the one of 'El Rey de la Frita'. Yes, I believe is better. The place is small but the service and food are excellent. The owner, 'El Mago', was very nice. We chatted for a while and he showed how humble and a hard working man he is. My wife share my same thoughts. Next time in Miami, we'll surely go back.

I've been working in Miami for almost six months now, and my biggest regret is just finding out about this place LAST WEEK. Think of all the fritas and watermelon juice I missed out on!!! It's anxiety inducing. Anyways, yeah yeah, Obama has been there. Im sure Obama has done late night Mickey D's drive through too. Come, my friends, for the amazing food. I got the fritas with the egg. My friend got the steak sandwich that was large enough for two people. The meat is spiced wonderfully, the bread is heavenly, and everything was satisfying. The only let down was the fries -- and its just because we were all expecting something amazing. ...instead we got crinkle fries. How dare they! I cant wait to go back and try something new. The service was wonderful, the place is kinda small and looks like its been there for 30 years. Oh, it has? Well that explains a lot. Also try the homemade hot sauce if you like spicy -- very flavorful. El Mago indeed. When's my next trip to miami???

Had a frita and split a pan con bistec today for lunch. The frita was the best I have ever had and the pan con bistec was super delicious. My wife also tried the chicharrones and commented they were top notch. The service was a little slow, but to be fair it was extremely busy and the waitresses were hustling around doing the best they could do to keep things flowing, as well as making sure the tables and counters stayed clean. El Mago's son-in-law came over to our table to ask how we liked our food and the restaurant in general. He was very friendly and engaging and made us feel right at home. We will definitely be back for the great food and friendly atmosphere. I can see why this place has been in business for almost 30 years. Applause to the owner El Mago. He really is a magician when it comes to cooking.

Was in Miami traveling my territory, seeing customers and after seeing this place on the Travel Channels Best Burger show, I had to stop in! Fantastic burgers. BY FAR THE BEST FRITAS EVER! Since I was a kid, if my grandparents took my sister and I out to eat, we always would pick El Mago De Las Fritas! Every time I fly back home to Miami I have to eat at this place at least once while I'm in town. Unlike the other frita places in Miami, these fritas aren't a freaky chalky red color or have creepy papitas with no flavor (Adrian S., I agree, Sergio's is certainly getting the stink eye from me too) The fritas are fresh, warm and done with just the right about of onions and papitas. Personally I eat mine with cheese but even a classic frita with no cheese is just to die for. There are only two parking spots in the front so if you park behind the christian book store I believe there is more parking over there. (I recommend the back parking because who really wants to back out of a parking spot directly to calle ocho)

Gets better with each visit. The last two times I've gone the friendly Mago himself has cooked up our fritas and they have been beyond words. I've tried the frita with cheese, the frita with egg, and they are all insanely good. But I have to say, my favorite might be the near-perfect, out of hand pan con bistec this place produces. I've brought friends and family members and they are blown away by the taste and quality of the food. I can't find a single complaint. The last time I went, the frying machine was broken, so no french fries :( No sweat, though. I just ordered an extra frita and was good to go. Hands down my favorite Cuban "fast food" place in Miami. There is magic in those sandwiches.

This place was visited by President Obama, therefore the restaurant has several pictures on the wall of him at the restaurant. Small joint operated by 3 people, one who cooks (I think he's the owner, he looks like the owner) and two servers. Not much is needed... First time having a frita cubana!! tried it.... I'll have it once in a while...

OH HELL YEAH!!! @burgerbeast suggested this place to me and Angela and I were lucky enough to stop by and have lunch with Mr Beast and Mrs Beast. Mago and his team are the sweetest people. I had tweeted the night before that I would be going and they responded immediately saying they would be expecting us. When we arrived we were welcomed with smiles from Mago and the team. Ok, so the big news is that Obama ate here. I was impressed with that and also that I got to meet Mr Mago in person. I had the Frita A Caballlo thanks to @burgerbeast suggestion and also had the cafe con leche, flan, and chicharrones which were the Saturday special. It was worth the long drive from Kissimmee to go and see and eat at this place. Plus we had some awesome company. This was an awesome experience.

Consistency. That is what makes you want to come back time and time again to a great tasting meal. That is something a lot of restaurants, predominantly in Miami, simply lack. El Mago never disappoints and is spot on all the time.

We went there today for the first time, its a little hole in the wall place but by far the best "burger" I have had in a long time!! They call them Fritas super good super cheap well worth it! My husband, Son, and I ate for $16.00 including drinks. Its a small place and we went at 3:00 in the afternoon and it wasn't too busy but I can see it getting packed! Def go on an off time to make sure you sit in a table, unless you like bar stools which are great but not good when you have a small child. Really really good food, people are friendly the Owner still cooks after 28 years in business and the daughter was there greeting people AND they DO speak English!! A MUST GO!!!!! We will be back. They had pictures of famous people on the walls including the President of the United States

Went here yesterday for lunch and had a good experience. I ordered the frita con queso (with cheese) and it came on a nice homemade bun, shredded potatoes, onions, and of course, the frita patty. The frita was very flavorful and I loved the fact that they do not skimp on the onions. The person I was with ordered a frita a caballo (with a fried egg on top) and that was out of this world amazing. They also had some chicharrones (fried pork skins) which looked very good as well, but I did not order them. My only gripe with the frita was that the potatoes were a little soggy and seemed as if they were not as fresh as they should have been. I don't know if I just got the bottom of the barrel so to speak or what, but that would be my only complaint. The service was outstanding though, and I definitely will be back again. Also of note: $10 minimum on credit card transactions. The parking situation is also horrific as there are only 3 spots to park in right in front of the place.

What a hidden gem! We would have never stepped foot in this unassuming restaurant because it is one of hundreds of hole-in-the-wall Cuban eateries in Miami. However, we read about El Mago Des Las Fritas as being one of the must try places in Miami - so we decided to give it a try. This place is amazing! Steeped in family tradition and secret recipes, and I now know why Obama orders 5 burgers every time he visits! The son who manages the restaurant couldn't be nicer, and he will explain in detail all of the items on the menu and the pride that goes into selecting each ingredient. Everything is made from scratch and any meat or produce has to pass the muster of the 75 year old chef. Well worth the trip and I easy on the wallet! By the way, this place is featured in many foodie books and is on a few television shows as a cultural must when visiting Miami!

Ahhh, El Mago! I was in shock when I scored one of those few parking spots in front of the place. This place defines hole in the wall, but who doesn't love these places? It's a deep hole in the wall; when you first pull up, you think the place is tiny but it's actually a decent-sized place. Think Cuban diner. This was my first taste of a Cuban hamburger. One Frita Cubana, please! (Of course I added the egg and cheese.) Boy, was it delicious! The unique blend of the patty, the crunch of the thin potato sticks, brought together with cheese and a runny egg ... Man, this was tasty! I'm drooling thinking about it! Deliciousness for just a few bucks. Try not to overeat though, you'll need a few brain cells to help navigate the only bad part about this place: backing out of that tiny parking lot!

Only come here for the Cuban Fritas burger. Experience: The staff was friendly and the food was quick. The place is set up as a diner, nothing fancy. Food: The only thing good is the Cuban Fritas burger. It was amazing! It's a chorizo pattie topped with fried onions and an egg (order it with the egg!). The bun is lightly buttered and toasted for a perfect finish. Overall: If you find yourself in Miami this is a place you have to visit.

No one makes a better frita. You want to eat a real good frita you come here. Second is el rey, and then it drops down from there. No other place comes close to these 2 in Miami. The owner still makes the fritas and is there most of the time. Talk about commitment. As much as i wish the place was bigger I think keeping it simple is part of the idea. Looks like he enjoys what he does.

First impressions: it's a true "joint." the fading handpainted sign, the beat-up linoleum and formica, old chrome stools, and yellowing flourescent menu sign, coupled with the wait staff's tenuous relationship with the english language tell you that you're in for either the best or the worst lunch ever. Luckily, it goes in the plus column. My first experience, at the behest of my co-workers, with the "Frita" phenomenon. And hey, Burger Beast said it was the best, and that guy is huge. I kept it simple, a frita with queso- fluffy fresh Cuban bread bun, crispy potato things, onions, and a seasoned meat patty that was rich but not overpowered with flavor. Just enough food, all by itself. Tamped down by an old-school cortadito to finish off the meal- you're in and out for less than $10, with change left over (including the tip.)

I went on a day when the place was empty and the owner was in. I placed my order and the waitress went to the back to get the "Mago." A sixty-something, heavy-set man wearing a white apron and decades of hard work emerges and starts on the same task he's been performing every day for almost 30 years. Cook the chorizo and onions. Add seasoning. Make sure the bread is toasted just right. Add potato strings. Repeat. For 20 minutes he stood in front of that grill to make sure the order was done right then watched me from a distance to make sure I liked what he'd prepared. As a consumer, that's a rare privilege I don't take for granted, especially in Miami. Needless to say the fritas were outstanding. I'd like to go back, but really, how can you top that??

ok so my cousin told me you have to try this place when you go to Miami i am cuban and had never heard of a frita before WOW now thats some good $%!* i made the mistake of only ordering 1 and by the time i got it and ate it i wanted 3 more and there was a line out the door so order wisely as not to wait to long oh and while your there try a Batido or the jugo de sandia WOW it was so good the only thing they need is more parking.

Some co-workers took me here. Great food, classic environment and great prices. A local place worth going too.

This was my first stop on my Calle Ocho food binge tour October 2011... It was bookmarked for some time.... Holy bee-Geez-us, this place is far from the beach. I was on a mission though! When i finally got there, there was not that many people there, so we got good personalized service. I was just gonna split the burger (FRITA) with a friend because this was stop number 1 of at least 3 that afternoon..... the prices were so cheap, we had to get one each.... my only error- in hindsight one of us should have gotten the frita with a fried egg.... next time I will try.... Now back to my frita experience: the beef tasted a little like mexican crorizo mixed with ground beef.... had a spicy type taste to it, but quite tasty, the papas on the burger were nice- gave it a crunchy texture.... they accompanied it with a bottle of hot sauce which she did mention was "real hot"..... and it was! It was nice, the place was clean, pictures of obama and his frita experience everywhere.... Mago there chillin..... Not much english spoken there, but all you need to know is frita,queso,cerveza,gracias..... One more experience and a secondary try..... it may get that 5th star!

I absolutely love this place. The food is amazing - my personal favorites are the croquetas preparadas, but the fritas and pan con bistec are delicious as well. The staff is super friendly and recognizes customers the second time they visit. It is a big family at Mago's! On top of all that, the prices are so reasonable that you can eat cheaper or comparably to a fast food joint and enjoy double the taste and quality. Mago de las Fritas is one of the best restaurants in Miami - no hassle, no pretentiousness, just good food and company!

I'm a gringo, so I have no particular view as to whether the Mago's fritas are the best, but I stopped in today for a quick lunch that I thoroughly enjoyed ... frita con queso y batido con mango. Both were top-notch and freshly prepared.

not bad. in fact, frita made like i'd expect. however, still think fritas from el rey de las fritas taste better.
